Matt K. Brett - Studio Visit
Name: matt k brett
Place of Birth: richmond, va
Who and/or what is inspiring you?: I've always been fascinated with graffiti paint outs and the other kinds of entropic patchworks and jerry-rigs seen throughout cities, especially philadelphia. Also, this artist Nancy Lupo. Her work is wild and plastic in a delightful way.

Daryl Bergman - Interview
Where did you spend the beginning of this summer?
I spent the month of June at the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild's artist in residence program. (The residency is in Woodstock, NY.)
How did this experience breathe into your work?
I had been thinking about making this work for a while. I wasn't exactly sure what I was going to paint, but I had an idea about the overall feel I wanted to create. Having time to concentrate was the main thing.
Explain what you were thinking about with these series of works?
I am really interested in the idea of a system of systems. I like the idea that images, objects, and ideas can form a great tangle or knot. We try to take this knot apart because as humans, we have a need to explain things. I was thinking about the idea that taking the knot apart or re-arranging it doesn't yield answers. It only makes more questions.
How does it relate to past works in surprising ways?
In my work from the past two years, I have grouped objects and images that have a formal relationship into a "system" ruled by intuition and free-association.
Who and/or what is currently inspiring you?
Cabinets of curiosity, card catalogs, the novel "That Awful Mess on the Via Merulana" by Carlo Emilio Gadda, patterns, television and movie screens, and The Infinite Library
